How TV Size and Viewing Distance Actually Work

The "right" TV size depends on one thing more than anything else: how far you sit from it. Sit too far from a small TV and you miss details. Sit too close to a massive screen and you feel like you're in the front row of a movie theater (not in a good way).

The 30-Degree Rule

The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) recommends a 30-degree viewing angle for comfortable, immersive viewing. THX, the cinema standard company, recommends an even wider 36 to 40 degrees for a theater-like experience. Our calculator uses the SMPTE 30-degree standard as the baseline, with the full THX range shown in the chart.

Can You Actually See 4K?

Here is the thing most TV salespeople will not tell you: unless you sit close enough, your eyes physically cannot distinguish 4K from 1080p. The human eye has a resolution limit of about 1 arcminute (1/60 of a degree). For a 65-inch 4K TV, that means you need to sit within about 8 feet to notice the extra pixels. Beyond that distance, you are paying for resolution your eyes cannot use.

Quick Reference: TV Size by Room

  • Bedroom (6-8 ft): 43" to 55"
  • Small living room (7-10 ft): 55" to 65"
  • Large living room (10-14 ft): 65" to 85"
  • Home theater (12+ ft): 75" to 98"

What About 8K?

Unless you are buying a 75-inch or larger screen and sitting within 5 feet of it, 8K resolution offers no visible benefit over 4K. There is also almost no native 8K content available. Save your money: 4K is the sweet spot for the foreseeable future.
